Getting your first period is a big deal. And it's totally normal to wonder how long this whole thing is supposed to go on for. The honest answer is that everybody is a little different. But there are some numbers that can help you know what is normal.
Most periods last somewhere between 3 and 7 days. If yours is a little shorter or a little longer once in a while, that is usually totally fine.
What does a normal period look like?
This is usually when the flow is the heaviest. You might need to change your pad or tampon more often. Some cramping is normal too. Warm tea or a heating pad on your belly can really help.
Things usually start to slow down. The color might change from bright red to a darker brown. That is just older blood leaving your body and it is completely normal.
By now it is usually very light. Some days it might even feel like almost nothing. Then it stops until next month.
What about the next period?
After your period ends, your body starts getting ready for the next one. This whole cycle usually takes about 21 to 35 days. At the start, it might not be the same every month and that is completely okay. It takes a while for your body to find its rhythm.
Think of your first year of periods like the first week of school. Things feel unpredictable at first. But slowly your body gets into a routine.
When should you talk to a grown-up?
Your period lasts more than 7 days pretty often, or it is so heavy you are going through a pad in less than an hour. You feel really unwell or have very bad pain that does not go away. Your period has not come back after 3 months and you are not sure why.
None of those things mean something is seriously wrong. But a doctor or a nurse can take a look and make sure everything is going well. It is always okay to ask.
